The Jacks are made up from a number of experienced dance musicians and callers:
Ffion Mair: Caller / Whistle / Bodhran
Patrick Dean: Melodeon
Martin Clarke: Fiddle
Ted Kemp: Banjo / Guitar
Laura Smyth: Cello
Our experienced dance caller, Ffion, can bring out the best from any crowd. She caters to everyone from the complete novice to the experienced dancer, and is a superb whistle and bodran player to boot. Outside of The Spring Heeled Jacks, Ffion is also known for her singing with the popular folk group, The Foxglove Trio.
Melodeon magician, Patrick, is an experienced dance musician having previously played with the Durham Ceilidh Band. He is able to coax a full range of textures and rhythms from his squeezebox, from foot-stomping jigs to graceful waltzes. Patrick can also be found playing accompaniment on melodeon for The Foxglove Trio.
Leading the Jacks with soaring melodies and technical flare is our dynamic fiddler, Martin Clarke. Having played with The Back to Square One Ceilidh Band for a number of years, he has an extensive repertoire and skill and is not unknown to call a dance or two himself!
Multi-instrumentalist Ted Kemp has played with a number of bands ranging from indie-rock to traditional folk, and is now gracing the Spring Heeled Jacks with his guitar and banjo. From gentle finger-picking harmonies to high energy chordal runs, Ted puts the spring into the Spring Heeled Jacks.
Laura can often be found playing concertina and cello to create harmonic and rhythmic bass lines to accompany her singing of traditional folk songs. Here, Laura brings her bass lines to complete and compliment the sound of the Spring Heeled Jacks.
